A person who is an adult can be described as a person or animal who has reached full growth.The biological definition of the term is animals that have reached sexual maturity, and therefore capable of reproducing. In the realm of human beings, adults refer to legal and social concepts. As opposed to a "non-adult" or "minor" an legal adult is a person who has attained the age of majority. They are considered to be autonomous, self-sufficient and accountable. A legal adult can be called a major. The age when a child turns an adult legally is 18 years old, however the definition of maturity can be different depending on the legal or country system, as well as the psychological condition of the child.

Adulthood refers to the period in human life when the person is at maturation in both physical and mental development. Adulthood is typically thought of as beginning at the age of 20 or 21. The middle age is about 40 years old before being followed by an elderly age of 60. The three phases of adulthood are the early years (from mid-30s through late-60s), middle adulthood from the mid-30s through late-60s, and finally adulthood (mid-60s up to end of life). By the time we reach the age of early adulthood (20 to mid-40s), our physical maturation is complete, although our height and weight could increase a bit. In the early years of adulthood, we attain the highest level of physical ability.
